Review: Joby Griptight One and Pro iPhone tripod mounts

When I turned to iPhone photography back in 2013, I found it, let's say, challenging, to mount an iPhone to a regular tripod. I discovered and bought a simple iPhone tripod mount on Kickstarter. But that mount had two drawbacks, in my opinion. It didn't work if the iPhone was in a case and if they form factor of the iPhone would change, I'd need to buy a new tripod mount.

A bit later I discovered the Joby Griptight One and later the Griptight Pro iPhone tripod mounts that solved those issues for me. While the original Griptight One was basically just a clamp (which works great - I still use it for certain settings), the Griptight Pro came with an additional screw at the back that would allow me to secure my iPhone even more compared to the clamp of the Griptight One.

And that's quite handy if you move around your tripod a lot and want to keep your iPhone securely mounted; e.g., when photographing at night or in low light conditions like in an abandoned building.

So here are both, the Griptight One and Griptight Pro mounts:

As I mentioned above, the Griptight One iPhone tripod mount is basically just a small clamp. You can attach it to every tripod that has a standard 1/4-20" screw.

It's not padded or anything like that but you can use it, even if you have a case on your iPhone, like the Moment case I use to mount the moment lenses.

However, the simplicity of the Joby Griptight One comes requires a compromise: It works only in landscape mode. But still, I have an use the Griptight One because of it's simplicity and I'll recommend it without caveat to anyone who just occasionally uses a tripod with iPhone.

If you need a more robust solution and move your tripod around a lot with your iPhone mounted, you may want to look at the Griptight Pro mount instead.

I tried and used the Griptight Pro with different plus and regular sized iPhone models since it was released. Just like the Griptight One it works even if you have a case attached to your iPhone. That's quite essential for me as Moment changed the lens mounting system for their lenses from an adhesive strap and now requires a case.

The Griptight pro mount is attached to a tripod using a standard 1/4"-20 tripod mount screw; so it will most likely fit and work with your existing tripod.

And with just 0.32 ounces it does not add too much weight to carry on luggage.

The Joby Griptight Pro works quite simple. You just put your iPhone between the rubber coated clamps, push the clamps together, and secure them with the rotary knob on the back. Done.
